It’s that time of year again – the holidays are approaching and it’s time to start thinking about what to do for family photos–fall family sessions or holiday sessions. Most families like to change the location from year to year, but since we have such a beautiful coastline, beach photos remain a popular choice. Fall beach sessions can be done throughout October and November as we usually still have mild temperatures and it is usually great sweater weather. With the cooler weather, the dunes change color and make a perfect backdrop for a beautiful family fall portrait. Another idea for a family photo session is the beautiful Greenfield Lake in Wilmington, North Carolina. The park has water, bridges. gazebos and beautiful trees and shrubs making a gorgeous backdrop for family photos. It is a wonderful location to take a walk to a few different spots in order to get a great variety of family photos. It’s also a stone’s throw from Downtown Wilmington, a great spot to grab dinner after a fun photo session.

When thinking of family photo ideas, one that is very much overlooked is in your own backyard. Many times I will photograph a small family using a lens that creates a creamy smooth background so the focus is on the family and not so much the scenery. In this case, some pretty shrubs with a little color and leaves on the ground, accentuate the image just enough to add a little interest. With these images however, the subjects are definitely the focus of the image and not the background. Here are a couple of examples of some beautiful family portraits taken in a very nondescript location.

What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session
When talking about family photo ideas, the question of what to wear commonly comes up. I get asked all the time on what their family should wear, and I suggest for fall sessions, everyone wear dark, preferably solid colors and everyone wear the same accent color. For example navy blue or black jeans or pants with a red shirt or scarf. I’ve also seen dark colors with some stripes mixed in which works well also.
